The only way I could make it function again is by switching off my notebook, unplugging and replugging the power adapter and finally switching the notebook on again.

Since I had been able to aquire an ip initially I used the recovery feature to remove the driver which I obtained from an gigabot not the intial build and added this driver later on an individual basis. It did never have something to do with reinstalling Windows or installing a new device like a HD, it just happend, usually after configuering new network properties with the tool Access Connections.
